Puerto de la Cruz is a busy resort with a charming old town still retaining its working atmosphere. Las Lonjas is a cobbled pedestrian street, one of the citys most picturesque spots. The Casa de Miranda on the old square, Calle Valois, with the Ventosa tower, 16th century church of San Francisco and San Juan and 17th century Royal Customs house are notable architectural attractions. Plaza del Europe is an ancient fortress overlooking the sea.

The waterfront along Playa de Martianez is the sun and sea centre-point, with its black sand, restaurants and pools.

La Laguna, the old capital, is in the beautiful Aguere valley. The most outstanding buildings are the Cathedral, the Santo Domingo Church and the Church of Nuestra Seora de la Concepcin. There are also several exemplary museums revealing the islands remarkable maritime history.

Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo, which are nearby, have become tourist resorts with first class hotels, natural swimming pools and extraordinary landscapes.

Santa Cruz is the administrative centre of Tenerife, with a busy cruise ship harbour, but unappealing to tourists.

By car you can explore Villa de la Orotava and the nearby mountains, Mount Teide, cliffs of the giants and the many lovely beaches.
