The Plaza de Maria Pita is an excellent place to begin a tour of this city. This square is dedicated to Maria Pita, the woman who warned the city of an imminent English attack after the failed invasion of 1588. In the statue in the plaza she is forever captured, risking her life in the middle of the night as she fired a cannon to warn of the coming of Sir Francis Drake.
From the Plaza, a walk through the picturesque Jardines de Mndez Nez and past the Romanesque-Gothic Iglesia de Santa Mara del Campo church will take you to the Museo Arqueolgico e Histrico. The manicured Jardines offer a restful stop for a picnic in the shade, and the museum is situated in a 16th century fortress. Recounting the history of the province it contains 1,000 years worth of local artifacts, from the Moors to the kings.
The most prominent beach in the city is Riazor Beach. It is long, wide, and conveniently right in town. When this beach is overcrowded, just outside of town is Santa Cristina. This beach is considered the best in the area and can be reached by car, bus or steamer, (a fun ride!)
This city can be reached by air seven times a week from Madrid. It can also be reached by daily bus or train connections to locations in Spain and France.
