There are great possibilities for winter sports with the highest peak, Mulhacn, reaching to 3478 metres. On the other hand, Granada is not far from the Mediterranean Sea, so it is a great place to visit in any season.
Granada offers the most important reminders of epochs in Spanish history, with the world-famous Alhambra at the top of the list. This series of palaces and gardens stands at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, overlooking the city and the fertile plain of Granada. Other major Christian monuments found in the city are the Cathedral, the Monastery of La Cartuja and many churches built by Moorish craftsmen.
Walk through beautiful gardens, charming narrow streets filled with flowers, sit down in one of those typical taverns to have some Trevlez ham and local wine. There are gypsies singing Flamenco, and don't miss a visit to their famous Cuevas (caves) in the mountain of the monastery of Sacromonte. Granada's popular festivals, based on Moorish and Christian tradition, are most colourful.
The part of the Costa del Sol belonging to the province of Granada consists of several romantic bays with wide sandy beaches. Among the most beautiful beaches are Salobrea, with a castle on a high rock that seems to be floating on a sea of green plants; La Herradura, a fishing village with a great view over the sea and the beautiful beaches; Torrenueva, with the widest beach in all the region and Castell de Ferro, with an old Arabian fortress.
Granada Airport is located about 16km west of Granada in the small town of Santa Fe. It is a modern airport with all the usual facilities.
