Car Hire Jandia Downtown Fuerteventura InformationFuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands and has, without doubt, some of the most impressive beaches in the whole of Europe. There is such a vast expanse of sand here, from the golden sand dunes of Corralejo in the north to the miles of flat beaches at Jandia in the south. This makes the island the ideal destination for the beach lover.
Fuerteventura is generally regarded as the oldest of all the Canaries, its strange curves and contours coming from various volcanic episodes in its past - the last eruption occurred around 7,000 years ago so you're pretty safe nowadays! It is the Canary Island closest to the African coast, with only 70 miles separating the 'Punta de la Entallada' from Cape Juby in Morocco.
Trips into the cape are available and are a very relaxing way to spend an afternoon. You can also take a short boat trip over to the small (only two square miles) island of Los Lobos if you really want to get away from it all for the day.
If you fancy something a bit more active, water sports are very popular here. Every year hundreds of surfers, windsurfers and divers descend on Fuerte, and during July the island is host to the P.W.A world windsurfing speed and slalom event at Sotavento in the south.
There are many new attractions which invite tourists to discover different aspects of the island's landscape and culture, such as the Betancuria Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography, and Tefia Craft Village.
Fuerteventura International Airport accepts flights from all major European cities. Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote accept the bulk of the international flights and those from mainland Spain, so it is often cheaper to make a connection through one of the other islands. Packages available depend very much on the nature of your stay, and many visitors choose the all inclusive travel and accommodation resorts deal. Shuttles and taxis run regularly from the airport. Flights between the islands can be chartered and prices vary seasonally.
