Car Hire Viladomat Downtown Barcelona InformationLively and also laid-back, this distinctly Catalan city boasts exceptional impressionist architecture, a cosmopolitan atmosphere, excellent beachfront, fantastic vistas and first class food and entertainment.
Port Vell, redeveloped especially for the Olympics, is an entertainment precinct and a good place to head into the city by strolling up the world famous Las Ramblas a tree lined pedestrian thoroughfare of buskers, pavement cafes and street artists, beginning at the Columbus statue and ending at the stately Placa de Catalunya. En-route it passes through the Barri Gotic, (old town) packed with windy streets, medieval buildings, rowdy tapas bars, mouthwatering paella restaurants and cheap pensiones.
Montjuc presides over the port and city and is home to some fine art galleries, leisure attractions, soothing parks and the main group of Olympic sites. Plaa d'Espanya, Parc Joan Mir, Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya and a series of terraces with photo-friendly fountain shows are highlights.
Picasso spent time here, and his museum is very popular, but its the eccentric brilliance of Antonio Gaudi thats really left its mark, most notably the draw-dropping, unfinished, Sagrada Familia cathedral, along with the bizarre and colourful, la Pedrera apartment block.
Barcelona is also fortunate to have fine beaches within the city, which are easily accessed from the old town (15 mins by bus), as well as a fine backdrop of mountains.
